History of the university

Almaty University of Power Engineering and Telecommunications was created on the basis of the Almaty Power Engineering Institute (1975 - 1997) on January 10, 1997. AUPET is the first non-state technical university with the status of a non-profit organization. Training is conducted in Kazakh and Russian languages. In 2013, training in English in two specialties: “Radio Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunications” and “Electric Power Engineering” was started. In 1989, the Almaty Power Engineering Institute was the first in Kazakhstan and one of the few in the Soviet Union which was certified by a commission of the State Inspectorate of the USSR State Administration. The high level of training at Almaty Power Engineering Institute was officially recognized at the Union level.  This is the undoubted success of a group of students, lecturers and university management.

In May 1997, “Educational and Scientific Complex of Energy and Telecommunications” (ESCET) was transformed into the Almaty Institute of Power Engineering and Telecommunications with the status of a non-profit joint-stock company. Gumarbek Zhusupbekovich Daukeyev was elected as a Rector of the new institute.

Since July 2010, the Almaty Institute of Power Engineering and Telecommunications has received the status of a university with the right to train students for master's and doctoral programs and a new name – the non-profit joint-stock company “Almaty University of Power Engineering and Telecommunications” (AUPET).

Almaty University of Power Engineering and Telecommunications named after Gumarbek Daukeyev is one of the leading technical universities in Central Asia. It provides training in the field of Heat Power Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, IT technologies and Information Security, Space Engineering, Robotics and Artificial Intelligence. The faculty of the university teaches specialists under College, Bachelor's, Master's and PhD programs.
